Desert de les Palmes Natural Park

Just 15 kilometres inland from Castellón's beaches, the Desert de les Palmes is a forested mountain massif that feels like another world — cool pine forests, ancient hermitages, panoramic ridges and almost total silence on weekday mornings. The name refers not to sand dunes but to the wild dwarf palms that bristle from the rocky slopes.

Trails & Terrain

The park covers 3,200 hectares of the Bartolo and Moleta ranges, rising to 729 metres at the Bartolo summit. A network of well-marked trails ranges from easy valley walks to the demanding ridge route that links the main peaks, rewarding hikers with views stretching from the Columbretes Islands to the mountains of Teruel.

The most popular route starts from the Carmelite monastery of El Desert (still inhabited by monks) and loops through holm oak and Aleppo pine forest to the Ermita de Sant Pau, a ruined hermitage clinging to a rocky crag. The full loop is around 8 km and takes 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace.

Wildlife & When to Go

The park is a stronghold for golden eagles, peregrine falcons and the elusive eagle owl — bring binoculars and scan the limestone crags in the early morning. Dwarf fan palms (Chamaerops humilis), the only palm native to continental Europe, carpet the south-facing slopes and give the landscape an almost North African texture.

Spring (March–May) is the finest season: wildflowers carpet the clearings, the air smells of rosemary and cistus, and temperatures are ideal for hiking. Summer is hot but the forest provides shade; winter mornings can be frosty at altitude but the low light is spectacular for photography.
