Castellón Cathedral & El Fadrí Bell Tower

Rising 58 metres above the old town, El Fadrí is one of the finest freestanding Gothic bell towers in Spain — a sandy-ochre column that has kept watch over Castellón since the 15th century. Climb it on a clear morning and the Columbretes Islands shimmer on the Mediterranean horizon.

A Tower Built Over Two Centuries

Construction of El Fadrí began in 1440 and stretched across generations of builders, which is why its octagonal shaft shifts subtly in style as it rises — a living timeline in stone. The name means 'the bachelor' in Valencian, a nod to the fact that it stands apart from the cathedral rather than attached to it.

Inside, a broad spiral ramp — wide enough for mules carrying construction materials — winds to the belfry, where nine historic bells still ring the canonical hours. The climb is gentle enough for most visitors and rewards you with a 360-degree panorama of the Plana lowlands stretching to the Sierra de Espadán.

The Cathedral Next Door

The Concatedral de Santa María beside El Fadrí is a patient survivor: largely destroyed in the Civil War, it was painstakingly rebuilt through the second half of the 20th century and reconsecrated in 2009. Look for the Baroque doorway salvaged from the original structure and the luminous modern stained glass that floods the nave with Mediterranean light.

Together the tower and cathedral form the spiritual and architectural heart of the Plaça Major, a broad square lined with orange trees where locals gather for the evening paseo. Arrive around sunset when the stonework glows amber and the square fills with the scent of azahar blossom in spring.
