Knockagh Monument

A 110-foot basalt obelisk standing 390 metres above sea level, the Knockagh Monument is the largest war memorial in Northern Ireland — and the finest viewpoint for miles in any direction. On a clear day you can pick out the Galloway coast of Scotland, the Mountains of Mourne, and the full sweep of Belfast Lough far below.

A monument born of grief and community

Erected to honour the men of County Antrim who fell in the First World War, the foundation stone was laid in October 1922 but financial difficulties and the death of its driving force, High Sheriff Henry Barton, meant the obelisk was not completed until 1936. After the Second World War it was rededicated to the fallen of both conflicts.

The monument is modelled on the Wellington Monument in Phoenix Park, Dublin, but at exactly half the height — a quietly poignant detail. Bronze panels list the names of County Antrim's dead, giving the hilltop a reflective, almost sacred atmosphere.

The panorama that justifies the climb

From the summit plateau, the view arcs from Groomsport on the Co. Down coast, across Belfast city and its harbour, all the way up the Antrim coastline to Whitehead and the Copeland Islands. On the best days, the Scottish hills float on the horizon like a mirage.

The site is free to visit, with a small car park right beside the monument. There are no cafés or amenities, so pack a flask — this is a place for quiet contemplation and big skies, not souvenir shops.

Getting there from Carrickfergus

The monument sits above the village of Greenisland, roughly three miles from Carrickfergus town centre. You can drive up via Monument Road from either the Monkstown or Carrickfergus side — the narrow, twisting road adds to the sense of arrival.

Keen cyclists tackle the Knockagh Cycling Route, an 11-mile loop from Carrickfergus Castle that passes Woodburn Forest on the way up. Expect a serious climb, but the descent back into town is pure reward.
