Hidden gem · Carrickfergus

Andrew Jackson Cottage & US Rangers Museum

Less than a mile from Carrickfergus town centre, a whitewashed 18th-century Irish farmhouse quietly holds one of the most surprising transatlantic stories in Northern Ireland: this is where the family of Andrew Jackson — seventh President of the United States — lived before emigrating to America in 1765. The restored cottage and adjacent US Rangers Museum make for a genuinely moving and underrated

The cottage that shaped a president

The Andrew Jackson family emigrated from Carrickfergus to the Carolinas in 1765, and their son Andrew would go on to become the seventh President of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837. The cottage near Boneybefore has been painstakingly restored inside and out to an authentic 18th-century state, giving a vivid sense of the rural Ulster life the family left behind.

Standing in the low-ceilinged rooms, it is genuinely striking to trace the line between this modest farmhouse and the White House. The interpretive displays handle the story with care, setting the Jackson family's emigration in the wider context of Ulster-Scots migration to the New World.

The US Rangers Museum next door

Adjacent to the cottage, the US Rangers Museum commemorates the first US Army Rangers, who were trained and based in Carrickfergus during World War II before the Allied invasion of North Africa. The connection between this small Northern Irish town and the formation of one of the US Army's most elite units is extraordinary and largely unknown outside military history circles.

The museum displays uniforms, equipment and archival photographs that bring the wartime story to life. Carrickfergus locals still remember the American soldiers who trained on the streets and shores of the town — a bond that the museum honours with real warmth.

Pairing it with the town

The cottage is just a short drive or a pleasant walk from Carrickfergus town centre, making it easy to combine with a morning at the castle and a stop at the Weekly Variety Market on a Thursday. It is the kind of place that rewards the curious traveller who goes slightly off the obvious path.

Entry is low-cost and the site is rarely crowded, meaning you can take your time in the cottage rooms and the museum without queuing or rushing — a rarity for a site with this level of historical significance.
