Gobbins Sea Safari from Carrickfergus Harbour

Most visitors drive past the Antrim coast — the Gobbins Sea Safari lets you see it the right way, from the water. Departing from Carrickfergus Harbour with Abhainn Cruises, this exhilarating boat trip takes in the castle from the sea, Whitehead Promenade, Blackhead Lighthouse and the vertiginous Gobbins Cliff Path — one of Europe's most dramatic coastal walks — all from a front-row seat on the lou

A completely different angle on the coast

The Gobbins Cliff Path has been described as one of the most dramatic coastal walks in Europe, threading across rope bridges high above the Irish Sea with the basalt cliffs of Islandmagee rising sheer on one side. Seeing it from a boat gives you the full scale that walkers on the path can never quite appreciate — the cliffs are enormous, the sea is very much present, and the lighthouse appears suddenly around a headland like a film set.

Carrickfergus Castle itself looks completely different from the water — the full bulk of the keep and curtain walls reveal themselves in a way that the harbour-side view only hints at. It is the best single photograph you will take in the area.

Blackhead Lighthouse and the wider lough

Blackhead Lighthouse, perched at the tip of the Antrim coast just north of Whitehead, is a working lighthouse that is largely inaccessible by land except via a short circular walk from Whitehead village. The sea safari passes it close enough to feel the spray, putting the structure in proper dramatic context against the basalt cliffs behind it.

The wider Belfast Lough on a clear day is a revelation — the Scottish hills visible to the north-east, the Copeland Islands to the east and the Mountains of Mourne rising in the south across the water. It is a geography lesson and a thrill in equal measure.

Practical planning

Abhainn Cruises operates the Gobbins Sea Safari from Carrickfergus Harbour, making it easy to combine with a morning visit to the castle before heading out on the water in the afternoon. Booking ahead is strongly advised in summer as spaces are limited on each departure.

Dress in warm, wind-resistant layers regardless of the season — the lough creates its own microclimate and the boat moves at pace. Children love it; sea legs are a bonus but not a strict requirement.
