Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
Table Mountain is Cape Town's defining landmark — a flat-topped giant that lords over the City Bowl, the Atlantic coast, and Robben Island all at once. Whether you ascend by rotating cable car or lace up for the Platteklip Gorge hike, nothing puts the city in perspective quite like standing on its ancient plateau.
The Summit Experience
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway rotates a full 360 degrees as it climbs, so every passenger gets a sweeping panorama before they even reach the top. Once on the plateau, a network of short walking paths and marked viewpoints lets you roam freely across the sandstone surface.
On clear days the views stretch from the Winelands to the Cape Peninsula — and on cloudy days the mountain pulls on its famous 'tablecloth', a rolling orographic cloud that is dramatic in its own right. Aim for a morning visit when skies are typically clearest and queues are shortest.
To Hike or to Ride
Platteklip Gorge is the most direct hiking route to the summit — steep, well-marked, and achievable in about 2.5 to 3 hours for a reasonably fit walker. It deposits you right at the upper cable station, so you can hike up and ride down if your legs prefer.
For first-time visitors or those with limited time, the cable car is the obvious choice. It runs weather permitting, so always check the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website or app on the morning of your visit before making the trip to the lower station on Tafelberg Road.
Practical Planning
The summit has a restaurant, a café, and a small shop — useful for a post-hike coffee with arguably the best view of any café in Africa. Stay at least 90 minutes to do the plateau justice rather than rushing back to the cable car queue.
Book cable car tickets online in advance, especially in peak summer (December–February), when walk-up queues can stretch to two hours. The mountain closes when high winds make cable car operation unsafe, so have a backup plan.
