Signal Hill Sunset Viewpoint

Signal Hill is Cape Town's most famous sunset perch — a 350-metre flat-topped promontory above the City Bowl and Sea Point from which the entire sweep of the Atlantic Seaboard turns copper and gold as the sun drops behind the Twelve Apostles. Best of all, you can drive almost to the very top.

The View and the Light

From the summit parking area, the panorama takes in the beaches of Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton, and Camps Bay stretching south, with Lion's Head rising immediately to the left and Table Mountain filling the eastern skyline. As the sun descends, the ocean shifts through shades of amber, rose, and deep violet in the space of about 20 minutes.

The Noon Gun — a cannon that has been fired at midday every day except Sundays since 1806 — sits on the road up the hill and is worth a stop on the way. It was originally fired to allow ships in the harbour to set their chronometers, and the tradition continues to this day.

How to Make the Most of It

Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to claim a spot in the small parking area and settle in — the light changes fast and peaks quickly, but the afterglow can linger for another 30 minutes after the sun disappears. Bring a blanket, something to drink, and a wide-angle lens.

Signal Hill is also a launch point for tandem paragliding operators, who take off from the grassy slopes and glide down to the Sea Point beachfront. If you want to experience the view from the air rather than the ground, book a slot for the same golden-hour window.

Combining Signal Hill with Lion's Head

Lion's Head — the 669-metre conical peak immediately adjacent — offers a more athletic version of the same reward. The circular trail from the Signal Hill Road car park takes two to three hours and involves chains and ladders in the steeper sections, but the 360-degree summit view of Table Mountain, the City Bowl, and the Atlantic Seaboard is exceptional.

A popular local combination is to hike Lion's Head at sunrise, then return to Signal Hill by car for sunset the same evening — two completely different moods of light, two completely different crowds, one unforgettable day.
