Phuket Aquarium & Marine Biological Center
Sitting right at the tip of Cape Panwa, this government-run aquarium is Phuket's original and most scientifically grounded marine attraction, open since 1983. The underwater tunnel, Andaman Sea species tanks, and active sea turtle rehabilitation area make it far more than a standard tourist fish tank.
Inside the Aquarium
The Phuket Marine Biological Center runs the facility as a working research station, which gives it a credibility that commercial aquariums often lack. Walk-through tanks showcase the full spectrum of Andaman Sea life — tropical reef fish, rays, sharks, and stunning coral formations.
The highlight for most visitors is the glass underwater tunnel, which puts you inside a living reef, and the 'Mystery of the Underworld' exhibition zone that explains the deep-sea ecosystems beyond the reef.
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation
The centre operates one of Thailand's most active sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation programmes. An open bay area at the rear of the facility allows visitors to observe turtles recovering before release — a genuinely moving experience that goes well beyond standard aquarium entertainment.
Staff conduct underwater feeding demonstrations at scheduled times; check the daily board at the entrance for the exact timetable on the day you visit.
Planning Your Visit
The aquarium is compact and can be done thoroughly in 90 minutes to two hours, making it an ideal morning activity before hitting Ao Yon Beach in the afternoon.
It sits at the very tip of the cape, so the drive in along the coast road is scenic in itself — factor in time to stop at the adjacent sea-level viewpoint promenade.
