La Croix des Gardes Hill & Park
Most visitors never leave the seafront, which means the forested hill of La Croix des Gardes — rising 164 metres above the city's western edge — is gloriously uncrowded. The reward for a 30-minute uphill walk through fragrant pine and eucalyptus is a sweeping panorama stretching from the Estérel massif to the Lérins Islands.
The Hike & the Summit Cross
The main trail starts from Boulevard Leader in the Californie neighbourhood and winds through the Parc Fiorentina, a protected green space that feels worlds away from the glittering hotels below. The large stone cross at the summit has marked this hilltop since the 19th century and is visible from the bay.
On clear days — most common from October to April before summer haze settles — you can spot the white outline of Sainte-Honorat monastery on the Lérins Islands and, further east, the Alpes-Maritimes mountains dusted with snow.
Sunset & Practical Tips
Sunset from the Croix des Gardes is spectacular: the Croisette curves below like a golden ribbon, the sea turns copper and the Cap d'Antibes headland glows in the distance. Bring a bottle of Côtes de Provence rosé and arrive 45 minutes before dusk to claim the best rock ledge.
Wear proper shoes — the path is uneven limestone and pine-needle covered. The park has no café, so pack water. The descent back to the Croisette takes about 20 minutes via Avenue du Dr Picaud.
