Ruta dos Muíños do Río Batán
Following the Río Batán inland from the coast, this gentle walking route passes a remarkable sequence of restored water mills (muíños) hidden beneath a cathedral canopy of oak and alder. It is the kind of place that feels entirely removed from the Atlantic-facing tourism of the coast, yet it lies just minutes from the town of Cangas.
The Mills and Their History
The Morrazo peninsula is threaded with small rivers that once powered dozens of communal grain mills, and the Batán valley preserves some of the best-restored examples in the province of Pontevedra. The mills date from the 17th to the 19th century and were shared by neighbouring villages on a rotating weekly schedule — a system of collective use that persisted well into the 20th century.
Several mills have been restored with their original millstones intact, and interpretive panels (in Galician, Spanish and English) explain the milling process and the social organisation that kept them running. The sound of water rushing through the sluice gates is constant and deeply calming.
Walking the Route
The full route is approximately 4 km return, following a well-marked path that crosses the river on stone footbridges and passes through dense riparian woodland. The trail is shaded almost entirely, making it an ideal escape on hot August afternoons when the beaches are packed.
Spring is the most photogenic season, when the riverbanks are carpeted in ferns and wildflowers and the water runs high and fast. In autumn the oak canopy turns amber and gold, and the damp air fills with the smell of moss and wet stone.
