Praia de Melide
Tucked inside the Parque Natural Illa de Ons buffer zone on the southern tip of the Morrazo peninsula, Praia de Melide is the kind of beach that makes you feel you have discovered somewhere entirely your own. Backed by rolling dunes and a lagoon, its water shifts from jade to deep turquoise depending on the tide.
A Beach at the Edge of a Natural Park
Melide sits adjacent to the protected dune system of the Parque Natural das Illas Atlánticas and shares the same crystalline water quality as the more famous Cíes beaches. Because it faces southwest, it catches afternoon sun long after north-facing coves have fallen into shadow.
The lagoon behind the dunes is a haven for wading birds, and the surrounding scrubland of heather and maritime pine gives the whole spot a raw, end-of-the-world feel that the busier beaches near the town of Cangas simply cannot match.
Practicalities and Getting There
The beach is reached via a 15-minute walk from the small car park near Donón village — the same starting point as the Monte do Facho trail, making a combined morning of hilltop views and an afternoon swim a natural pairing.
There are no beach bars or lifeguards here, so come self-sufficient. The lack of services is precisely what keeps the crowds thin even in August. A portable shade shelter and a picnic from Cangas market will set you up perfectly.
