Es Carnatge Coastal Nature Reserve

Tucked between Can Pastilla and Coll d'en Rabassa, Es Carnatge is one of the most genuinely surprising corners of Palma Bay — a protected coastal strip of fossil-rich limestone cliffs, crystalline coves and a scenic path where plane-spotters, joggers and dog-walkers all happily coexist. It's the antidote to the sunbed row, and it's free.

A Geological Oddity on the Seafront

Es Carnatge was declared an Area Natural d'Especial Interès precisely because its low rocky cliffs contain fossil beaches of Quaternary origin with real palaeontological value — deposits of fossil fauna that have helped scientists reconstruct the climatic history of Mallorca. It's a rare thing: a genuinely wild, scientifically significant landscape sitting minutes from a major international airport.

The water here is among the cleanest in Palma Bay. Rocky ledges and natural steps lead down to the sea, and while it's not a sandy beach, locals have been swimming off these rocks for generations. Fishermen still work the shoreline in the early morning.

The Path, the Views & the Planes

A well-maintained promenade runs the length of the reserve, accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, linking a series of small sandy coves and rocky outcrops. Wooden viewing platforms with shade and benches face out over the bay, and the path is illuminated at ground level after dark — making a sunset or evening walk here genuinely magical.

The reserve sits directly on the final approach path for Palma's Son Sant Joan Airport, so every few minutes a wide-body jet glides overhead at surprisingly low altitude. It sounds like it shouldn't work, but the combination of crashing waves, wild rock and aircraft theatre is oddly thrilling — aviation enthusiasts rate it as one of the best free plane-spotting spots in Europe.

Practical Notes

Es Carnatge is one of the few coastal spots near Palma where dogs are allowed to swim and roam freely, making it hugely popular with local dog owners early in the morning. Come at sunrise for the full experience: soft light on the bay, planes banking in low over the Mediterranean, and almost nobody else around.
