Mill Road

Half a mile south-east of the Botanic Garden, Mill Road is the antidote to the tourist-polished city centre — a long, lively street of independent cafés, international delis, vintage shops, and bakeries that reflects Cambridge's genuinely diverse, student-and-local population. Walk it on a Saturday morning and you will eat very well for very little.

Eating and Drinking Like a Local

Mill Road is packed with independent restaurants, bakeries, and international food stores representing cuisines from across South Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Southern Europe — it is the street Cambridge residents actually eat on, away from the college-quarter price premiums.

The stretch between the railway bridge and Petersfield is the densest for food: look for the Sri Lankan curry houses, the Turkish bakeries selling fresh simit, the independent coffee roasters, and the zero-waste grocery shops that have made the road a destination for the city's food-conscious crowd.

Brown Bread Bakery, a family-run operation on the road since 2007, specialises in traditional bread-making techniques and is worth a morning detour for a proper sourdough loaf or a pastry eaten on the street.

The Mill Road Winter Fair

If your visit falls on the first Saturday of December, you are in luck: the Mill Road Winter Fair closes the entire street to traffic and transforms it with stalls, live music, and a community atmosphere that is about as far from a corporate Christmas market as it is possible to get.

The fair has been running for decades and is entirely community-organised, which shows — the stalls are genuinely local, the food is excellent, and the whole street takes on a festive warmth that even hardened cynics find hard to resist.

Outside fair season, the atmospheric Mill Road Cemetery at the eastern end of the street offers a quiet, tree-lined walk that is unexpectedly beautiful and popular with local photographers for its Victorian funerary architecture and wildflower patches.
