Cambridge Market Square

Ringed by the medieval Guildhall and the spire of Great St Mary's Church, Cambridge Market Square has been a trading hub since the Middle Ages — and it still delivers, with stalls piled high with local cheeses, fresh-baked sourdough, international street food, and handmade crafts. It is the city's loudest, most democratic square, and the best place to eat cheaply alongside students and professors

What to Buy and Eat

The daily stalls (Monday to Saturday, 10 am–4 pm) offer a broad sweep of produce: fresh fruit and vegetables, cut flowers, vinyl records, handmade jewellery, and an impressive run of hot-food traders serving everything from Nigerian jollof rice to Japanese ramen and grilled halloumi wraps.

On Sundays the character shifts entirely — a craft market takes over, selling organic produce from local Cambridgeshire farmers alongside work from regional potters, sculptors, and photographers, making it the better day for gifts and browsing.

foodPark, Cambridge's first collective of street-food traders, also pops up in and around the city centre on rotating days, showcasing independent vendors who prioritise quality over speed — check their social media for the week's location.

The Square as a Landmark

The market sits at the geographical heart of the city, which means almost every walking itinerary passes through it naturally — use it as your orientation point before heading to the colleges or the Fitzwilliam Museum.

The Guildhall's classical façade on the south side and the Gothic tower of Great St Mary's to the north frame the stalls perfectly and make even a quick stop feel historically weighted.

Grab a coffee from one of the market's independent traders and claim a bench: the people-watching — cyclists, tourists, academics, and buskers — is a Cambridge experience in itself.
