Great St Mary's Church Tower

Climb 123 steps up the 15th-century tower of Great St Mary's — the University Church — and the reward is the single finest publicly accessible panorama in Cambridge: a 360-degree sweep of college rooftops, the River Cam, King's College Chapel, and the flat Fenland horizon beyond. It costs next to nothing and most visitors walk straight past the door.

The Climb and the View

Great St Mary's dates back to the 1400s and served as the ceremonial heart of the university for centuries — degree ceremonies were held here before the Senate House was built next door, and the church bells still set the time standard for Cambridge.

The tower staircase is steep and narrow, so wear flat shoes and take your time; the effort is repaid the moment you step out onto the gallery and the full geometry of the city unfolds below you — the fan-vaulted roof of King's College Chapel directly to the south, the River Cam glinting to the west, and the market square buzzing immediately below.

Clear days extend the view well into the Fens, and on bright mornings the low East Anglian light gives every stone building a warm amber glow that makes the scene almost impossibly photogenic.

When to Visit

Early morning on a weekday is the sweet spot: the tower opens at 9:30 am, the market square below is just waking up, and you will likely have the gallery almost to yourself — a very different experience from the midday crush.

The tower is also worth visiting at dusk in summer, when the light turns golden and the colleges below switch on their interior lights, giving the view an entirely different and more romantic quality.

Combine the visit with a walk through the Backs immediately afterwards — cross the road, pass through King's College gateway, and you are on the riverbank within five minutes.
