Cascadas de Arín (Arín Waterfalls)

Hidden in a gorge just outside Calca, the Cascadas de Arín are one of the Sacred Valley's most accessible natural surprises — a series of cascading falls tumbling through lush Andean vegetation, with the snow-capped peaks of the valley rim visible above the treeline. Almost no tour groups come here, which means the pools, the birdsong, and the cool mist are essentially yours.

Getting There and What to Expect

The Arín waterfalls are noted for their easy access and views of the Andean surroundings, making them ideal for travellers who want a nature fix without a full-day commitment. The walk from Calca takes under an hour on a clear trail that follows a stream uphill through increasingly lush vegetation — a vivid contrast to the open, sun-baked valley floor below.

As you climb, the landscape shifts from dry scrub to dense cloud-forest understorey, with mosses, ferns, and orchids clinging to the rocky walls of the gorge. The sound of the falls precedes the sight of them by several minutes, building anticipation as you round the final bend.

Wildlife and the Natural Setting

The gorge above Calca is a micro-habitat that supports a surprising range of birdlife. Hummingbirds are almost guaranteed near the flowering shrubs along the trail, and patient observers may spot Andean flickers, torrent ducks, and various tanagers. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The falls themselves drop in several tiers into rocky pools — cool, clear, and inviting after the uphill walk. The surrounding vegetation keeps the gorge shaded and several degrees cooler than the valley floor, making it a particularly pleasant escape during the warmer dry-season months of June to August.

Combining Arín with a Full Calca Day

The Arín waterfalls pair perfectly with a morning at the Mercado Central and an afternoon at the Mirador de Calca, giving you a complete Calca day that covers food, panoramic views, and nature without needing a car. The falls are best visited in the late morning, after the market and before the afternoon clouds roll in from the east.

Wear waterproof shoes or trail sandals — the path near the falls is almost always wet and slippery. Pack a light rain jacket even in the dry season; the microclimate in the gorge generates its own mist regardless of the weather in the valley below.
