Calca Mercado Central
Unlike the craft-heavy markets of Pisac and Pisac, Calca's Mercado Central is a working, breathing food market where locals actually shop. Stalls overflow with Andean tubers in colours you won't find in any supermarket, wheels of fresh quesillo cheese, bundles of muña herb, and vendors ladling out steaming bowls of caldo de gallina for a few soles.
A Market Built for Locals, Not Tourists
Calca has significantly less tourism than its neighbours, and its central market reflects that authenticity perfectly. You will find fruits, vegetables, local cheese, meat, and even beautiful flowers sold by Quechua-speaking vendors in traditional dress — the kind of scene that feels genuinely unrehearsed.
The market spills across several blocks near the two main plazas, Plaza de Armas and Plaza Sondor, and reaches its peak bustle on Sunday mornings when producers from surrounding communities bring in highland produce: native potato varieties, choclo corn with kernels the size of a thumbnail, and dried herbs used in Andean medicine.
What to Buy and Eat
Look for quesillo, a soft fresh cheese made in the valley, sold wrapped in totora reeds. Pair it with a bag of cancha (toasted maize) from a neighbouring stall and you have the perfect Andean snack for the road. Handmade textiles inspired by Inca and Quechua motifs also appear here, often at a fraction of the price asked in Pisac or Cusco.
Street-food vendors cluster near the market entrance selling api morado (a thick purple-corn drink) and tamales wrapped in banana leaves. For a sit-down meal, the market's inner food court offers set lunches — a soup, a main, and a juice — for under S/10.
Getting the Most from Your Visit
Arrive before 9 am on a Sunday for the widest selection and the most animated atmosphere; by midday many stalls begin to pack up. Bring small-denomination soles — vendors rarely have change for large bills — and a reusable bag, as plastic bags are increasingly restricted.
Calca is easily reached from Pisac (20–25 minutes by colectivo) or from Cusco (about 1 hour 15 minutes). The town's two busy bus terminals connect it to the entire Sacred Valley, making it a practical stop on any valley itinerary.
