Santa María la Mayor Collegiate Church
Rising above Calatayud's rooftops on a ridge of crumbling rock, the UNESCO-listed Mudéjar tower of Santa María la Mayor is one of the most arresting pieces of medieval architecture in all of Spain. Its intricate brick lacework, geometric tilework and soaring octagonal form make it the undisputed symbol of the city.
A Tower Born of Two Worlds
Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, the tower fuses Islamic construction techniques with Christian iconography in a way that feels completely natural — a living record of Aragon's multicultural medieval past.
Step inside the collegiate church itself and you'll find a richly gilded Plateresque doorway, a fine Gothic nave and a Baroque altarpiece that fills the apse with gold. The contrast with the austere brick exterior is genuinely startling.
Climbing the Surrounding Streets
The church sits in the upper barrio, and the steep lanes leading to it are half the pleasure — whitewashed walls, ceramic house numbers and the occasional cat asleep on warm stone.
Arrive in the late afternoon when the low Aragonese sun turns the tower's brick the colour of saffron. Photographers routinely call this the best light in the city.
