Restaurante Casa Escartín

Casa Escartín has been feeding Calatayud for decades and remains the most reliable address in town for honest, ingredient-led Aragonese cooking. The menú del día is a masterclass in regional eating — expect migas pastor, roast lamb from the Jalón valley and a glass of local Garnacha included in the price.

What to Order

Migas — breadcrumbs fried with olive oil, garlic, chorizo and pork — is the defining dish of inland Aragon and Casa Escartín's version is properly rustic and deeply satisfying. Order it as a starter and you'll understand immediately why shepherds lived on this for centuries.

Follow with the cordero al chilindrón, a slow-braised lamb with tomatoes and peppers that has been on the menu here seemingly forever. The meat falls off the bone and the sauce is rich enough to demand extra bread.

The Atmosphere and the Value

The dining room is unfussy — tiled walls, paper tablecloths, a television on low — but the welcome is warm and the portions are generous in the way that only family-run Spanish restaurants manage.

A full three-course menú del día with wine and bread rarely exceeds €13–€15, which makes it one of the best-value lunches you'll find anywhere in inland Spain. Arrive by 13:30 to guarantee a table.
