Roman Ruins of Bílbilis (Municipium Augusta Bílbilis)
Just 4 km outside Calatayud, perched on a commanding hilltop above the Jalón river, the Roman town of Bílbilis is one of Aragon's most atmospheric and least-visited archaeological sites. This was the birthplace of the poet Martial, and the excavated forum, theatre and thermal baths give a vivid sense of a prosperous provincial Roman city.
Walking Through Martial's Hometown
Marcus Valerius Martialis — the sharp-tongued Latin epigrammatist whose observations on Roman life still feel startlingly modern — was born here around 38 AD, and the site museum contextualises his world with artefacts, mosaics and inscriptions found during excavations that began in earnest in the 1970s.
The theatre is the most visually striking element: cut into the hillside in the classical manner, its curved cavea looks out over a landscape of olive trees and limestone ridges that has changed remarkably little since the 1st century.
A Site Worth the Short Drive
Bílbilis sees a fraction of the visitors that comparable Roman sites in Spain attract, which means you can often wander the forum in complete solitude — a rare luxury in modern heritage tourism.
The on-site museum is small but well curated, with bilingual Spanish-English panels. Allow at least two hours: one for the museum and one for the open-air ruins, which require some walking on uneven ground.
