Marché du Boulevard Jacquard
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, Boulevard Jacquard transforms into one of the liveliest street markets in the Hauts-de-France region, with more than 100 stalls stretching along the city's grandest avenue. Local fishmongers unload the morning's Channel catch while cheese vendors from the surrounding countryside set up wheels of Maroilles and Mimolette.
What to Buy
The fish stalls are the undisputed stars: sole, turbot, sea bass and brown shrimp (crevettes grises) landed at nearby Boulogne-sur-Mer arrive here still glistening. Vendors will clean and fillet on the spot, and prices are a fraction of supermarket equivalents.
Cheese and charcuterie stalls offer regional specialities you'll struggle to find outside northern France — look for Vieux-Boulogne, reputedly the world's smelliest cheese, alongside andouillette de Cambrai and potjevleesch, a cold meat terrine in jelly that is pure Nord-Pas-de-Calais comfort food.
The Atmosphere
By 09 h the boulevard is shoulder-to-shoulder with locals doing their weekly shop, and the noise — haggling, gossip, the thwack of fish on ice — is gloriously authentic. This is emphatically not a tourist market; it's where Calaisiens actually eat.
Street food vendors sell gaufres (Belgian-style waffles) dusted with pearl sugar, and a couple of rotisserie trucks fill the air with the scent of roasting chicken — grab a half-bird and a baguette for a perfect market lunch on the go.
Practical Tips
Arrive before 09 h 30 for the best fish selection; by 11 h the prime catch is gone. Bring cash — most stalls don't take cards — and a sturdy bag. The market wraps up around 13 h.
Boulevard Jacquard runs through the heart of the city centre and is a 7-minute walk from Calais-Ville railway station, making it easy to combine with a morning arrival from London St Pancras via Eurostar to Lille then TGV.
