Calais produced the world's finest machine-made lace for two centuries, and this stunning museum — housed inside a working 19th-century lace factory — tells that story with theatrical flair. Couture gowns by Chanel, Dior and Givenchy share floor space with thundering Leavers looms that still clatter away on the ground floor.
The lace that dressed the world
The Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode sits on the Quai du Commerce in the heart of the Calais-Nord district, its red-brick façade instantly recognisable. Inside, the permanent collection traces how English lacemakers fleeing the Luddite riots smuggled their looms into Calais in 1816 and sparked an industry that would clothe European royalty.
More than 500 haute-couture pieces illustrate how Calais lace migrated from petticoats to the runways of Paris, with labels still ordering from the town's remaining ateliers today. The displays are beautifully lit, and bilingual panels mean nothing is lost in translation.
Live demonstrations and the fashion galleries
On weekday mornings you can watch a Leavers loom in full, deafening operation — a machine so complex it takes a skilled worker years to master. The rhythmic clank is oddly hypnotic, and staff are happy to explain exactly how 50,000 individual threads are manipulated simultaneously.
The upper fashion galleries rotate temporary exhibitions that have previously showcased Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier, so even repeat visitors find something new. Allow at least two hours; the museum café overlooking the canal is a fine place to decompress afterwards.
Practical tips for your visit
The museum is a ten-minute walk from Calais-Ville train station and is well signposted from the city centre. Combined tickets with the Musée des Beaux-Arts are available at the desk and represent excellent value.
Photography is permitted throughout the permanent collection, making it a favourite with fashion bloggers hunting dramatic backdrops. The museum shop stocks authentic Calais lace by the metre — a genuinely unique souvenir you won't find cheaper anywhere else.
