Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode

Calais made the world's finest machine-made lace for two centuries, and this sleek museum inside a restored 19th-century bobbin-lace factory tells that story with runway-worthy flair. Couture pieces by Chanel, Dior and Jean-Paul Gaultier hang alongside thundering Leavers looms that still clatter away on the ground floor.

The Lace Halls

The centrepiece is a working floor of Victorian-era Leavers looms, each the size of a small car, weaving intricate patterns at hypnotic speed — a genuinely rare industrial spectacle you won't find anywhere else on earth.

Upstairs, backlit panels display gossamer lace samples alongside the trade catalogues that once seduced Parisian couturiers, giving you a clear sense of how a northern French port city shaped global fashion for generations.

Fashion Galleries

Rotating temporary exhibitions bring in contemporary designers who still source Calais lace — recent shows have featured Valentino bridal gowns and Alexander McQueen archive pieces, making this as relevant to fashion lovers as any Paris museum.

A small but well-curated gift shop sells genuine Calais lace by the metre, scarves and jewellery, so you can leave with a tangible piece of the city's heritage rather than just a postcard.

Planning Your Visit

Allow at least two hours; the museum is compact but dense with detail. Audio guides are available in English and are genuinely worth picking up for the loom demonstrations.

The building itself — the former Usine Boulart on Rue de Valenciennes — is a handsome red-brick industrial cathedral that photographs beautifully from the cobbled street outside.
