Quartiere Castello

Perched roughly 100 metres above sea level on a fortified limestone hill, Castello is the oldest and most dramatically layered quarter in Sardinia's capital. Narrow streets that suddenly open onto sun-drenched terraces, centuries of Pisan, Aragonese and Savoyard stonework, and views that sweep the entire Gulf of Angels make this the unmissable anchor of any Cagliari visit.

A Living Citadel, Not a Museum

Enclosed by 13th-century Pisan walls, the quarter holds the city's cathedral, major museums and two iconic medieval towers — Torre dell'Elefante and Torre di San Pancrazio — all within easy walking distance of each other.

The streets shift constantly: broad, sunlit terraces with sweeping sea views give way to steep, shadowed alleys where the stonework stays damp year-round. Getting lost here is both easy and worthwhile, and car access is restricted to residents only, so the lanes stay blissfully quiet.

Bastione di Saint Remy — The Postcard View

Your anchor is the Bastione di Saint Remy in Piazza Costituzione, where a monumental flight of steps climbs to the Terrazza Umberto I. From the top you can trace the Gulf of Cagliari, pick out Poetto Beach in the distance and watch the city's rooftops glow amber at sunset.

A café sits right on the terrace, making it the perfect spot for an Aperol spritz as the light drops — locals and visitors alike congregate here every evening in an effortless, unpretentious ritual.

Towers, Cathedral and Practical Tips

Climb the Torre dell'Elefante (built 1307) for a 360° bird's-eye view over the terracotta rooftops of Castello and down to the harbour below. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria on Piazza Palazzo is equally rewarding — its Pisan-Romanesque façade conceals a richly decorated baroque interior.

A public elevator near Via Roma links the lower city directly to the quarter, eliminating the steepest part of the climb and leaving you with energy to explore. Late afternoon is the most atmospheric time to arrive, when the low sun turns the limestone walls a warm gold.
