Parco Naturale Molentargius-Saline
Most cities make you travel hours for a genuine wildlife encounter. Cagliari does it in a ten-minute bike ride. The Molentargius-Saline Regional Park is a 1,600-hectare wetland wedged between Poetto Beach and the city — and it is home to one of Europe's largest urban flamingo colonies, visible year-round.
A Wetland World Between City and Sea
The park comprises a mosaic of freshwater lagoons, historic salt pans and reed beds that have attracted migratory and resident birds for centuries. The flamingos — often numbering in the thousands — feed in the shallow saline pools, their shocking pink plumage an almost surreal contrast against the white salt flats and the city skyline behind them.
Beyond flamingos, the park shelters herons, egrets, cormorants, black-winged stilts and dozens of migratory species that pass through on the European flyway. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; the flat terrain means sightlines are long and unobstructed.
How to Explore: Bike, Walk or Both
The park's main cycle and pedestrian trail is a moderate 9.2 km path that winds through the wetlands and salt pans, with multiple observation points overlooking the flamingo pools. The flat terrain makes it genuinely easy — no climbing, no technical difficulty — and the circuit takes around two hours at a leisurely pace.
Bikes can be rented in Cagliari or at Poetto Beach, and many visitors combine a morning in the park with an afternoon on the beach, since the two are directly adjacent. Entry to the park is free; simply follow the signed cycle path from the Poetto beachfront road.
When to Visit and What to Expect
Flamingos are present throughout the year, but the colony is largest in late spring and early summer when the birds are breeding. Early morning visits reward patience: the light is softer, the air cooler, and the birds are most active before the midday heat sends them into a motionless huddle.
The park is also beautiful at dusk, when the salt pans turn rose-gold and the flamingos silhouette against a vivid sky. Mosquito repellent is a sensible addition to your kit in summer months, particularly near the reed beds.
