La Presqu'île & the Canal Basin at Dusk
South of the city centre, where the Orne river and the Caen Canal converge, the Presqu'île district is a quietly regenerating peninsula of converted warehouses, independent breweries, street art and waterside terraces that most day-tripping visitors never reach. Come at sunset and you'll have it almost to yourself.
A neighbourhood reborn
The Presqu'île was a working industrial zone until the 1990s; today the old grain silos and dock buildings have been converted into loft apartments, a contemporary arts centre (the Cargö music venue), and a growing cluster of craft beer bars and independent restaurants along the canal quays.
The street art scene here is genuinely impressive — the city commissioned large-scale murals on the old warehouse walls as part of an urban renewal programme, and walking the quayside is like moving through an open-air gallery. The mural on the former Malterie building facing the canal is particularly striking.
What to do here
Rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak from the hire point near the Pont de la Fonderie bridge and paddle the calm canal toward the Orne estuary — the city skyline and castle walls look completely different from the water.
For a drink, the Brasserie du Calvados microbrewery has a taproom on Quai François Mitterrand open from late afternoon, pouring unfiltered lagers and hoppy pale ales made with local barley. It fills with young Caen residents after 18:00 and has the easy, unhurried energy of a neighbourhood that knows it hasn't been discovered yet.
