Brasserie Le Normandie
Tucked just off Place Courtonne near the canal, Le Normandie is the kind of unhurried brasserie that Caen locals actually go to — red leather banquettes, tiled floors, and a menu that reads like a love letter to the Calvados department's larder. The sole meunière alone is worth the detour.
What to order
Start with a plateau de fruits de mer if you're visiting between September and April — the oysters come from the nearby Cotentin coast and are shucked to order at a zinc counter visible from the dining room.
For a main course, the tripes à la mode de Caen is the definitive local test: slow-braised for hours in dry cider and Calvados with aromatic vegetables, served bubbling in a small cast-iron pot. It's rich, gelatinous and deeply satisfying on a grey Normandy afternoon.
The Norman cheese board and cider
The cheese trolley is not a metaphor — an actual trolley arrives tableside loaded with a rotating selection of Normandy AOC cheeses at various stages of ripeness, and the server will cut you as many as you like.
Ask for a half-bottle of local cidre bouché brut rather than wine with your meal; the dry, lightly sparkling cider cuts through the richness of the cream-based dishes far better than most whites, and it costs a fraction of the price.
