Rifugio Menaggio Viewpoint via Monte Grona Trail
Lace up your boots and climb from the hills above Cadenabbia toward Monte Grona (1,736 m) to reach the Rifugio Menaggio at 1,400 m — a mountain hut perched on a ridge with a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama stretching from both branches of Lake Como to the snow-capped Bernina Alps on clear days. This is the view that makes locals go quiet.
The Climb
The most accessible starting point is the village of Breglia, reached by a short taxi or car ride from Cadenabbia; from there a well-marked CAI trail (path 09) winds through chestnut forest before opening onto alpine meadow.
The ascent to the rifugio takes roughly 1.5–2 hours at a moderate pace, gaining about 700 m of elevation — challenging enough to feel earned, manageable for fit walkers in proper footwear.
The Panorama
From the rifugio's terrace you can trace the full Y-shape of Lake Como below — the Lecco branch to the east, the Como branch to the west, and the central basin glittering in between.
On exceptionally clear mornings the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa are visible on the horizon beyond the nearer Lugano Prealps, a sight that rewards an early alpine start.
The rifugio serves hot food, cold beer and the kind of polenta that tastes better at altitude — plan your arrival around lunch.
Logistics
Breglia is approximately 8 km from Cadenabbia; local taxis from Cadenabbia or Menaggio handle the transfer easily.
The trail is typically snow-free from May through October. Always check conditions at the rifugio's website before setting out.
