Lake Como Car Ferry (Traghetto) Bellagio–Cadenabbia Crossing
The ten-minute car ferry that shuttles between Cadenabbia and Bellagio is one of the most charming transport experiences in Italy — a flat-bottomed traghetto that carries cars, motorbikes, cyclists and foot passengers across the central basin of Lake Como several times an hour throughout the day. Even if you have no reason to cross, the crossing itself is the reason.
The Experience
You board at the small Cadenabbia dock, and within minutes the boat swings out onto open water with the full panorama of the lake's three arms spreading around you — the kind of view that makes fellow passengers reach for their cameras in unison.
The crossing to Bellagio takes roughly 10 minutes; the return leg from Varenna (also served by the same ferry line) takes about 15 minutes and gives you a completely different angle on the mountains.
Stand at the bow for the best views; the light on the water between 10:00 and 11:00 is particularly beautiful as the morning haze lifts.
Practical Magic
The ferry runs frequently enough (roughly every 30 minutes in peak season) that you can use it spontaneously — arrive at the dock, buy a ticket at the booth, and board.
Foot passengers pay a very modest fare; taking a car across is also straightforward and far less stressful than driving the narrow SS340 around the lake's tip.
The same Gestione Navigazione Laghi service connects Cadenabbia by faster hydrofoil to Como city, Varenna and Menaggio — a full day of island-hopping by water is easily constructed from this single dock.
Combining with Bellagio
A logical half-day: take the morning ferry to Bellagio, walk the stepped lanes of the centro storico, lunch at one of the harbour restaurants, then return by the afternoon ferry in time for an aperitivo on the Cadenabbia promenade.
The ferry also makes a Varenna day-trip effortless: cross to Bellagio, pick up the connecting ferry to Varenna, explore Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, then return via the same route.
