Mercado de Abastos de Cáceres
Tucked just off the Plaza Mayor on Calle Sergio Sánchez, this bustling covered market is where Extremadurans do their real shopping. Stalls overflow with pimentón de la Vera, locally cured ibérico ham, creamy torta del Casar cheese and seasonal wild mushrooms from the nearby sierra.
What to Buy and Taste
Head straight for the cheese vendors and ask for a wedge of Torta del Casar — a runny, almost liquid sheep's milk cheese with a bittersweet rind that is one of Extremadura's greatest culinary achievements. Pair it with a slice of jamón ibérico de bellota from a local carnicería for an instant picnic.
The spice stalls sell pimentón de la Vera in sweet, bittersweet and hot varieties; buying it here directly from traders who source it from the Vera valley guarantees freshness and provenance.
Market Rhythm and Atmosphere
The market is liveliest Tuesday through Saturday mornings from about 09:00 to 14:00, when farmers from surrounding villages bring in seasonal produce. Spring brings white asparagus and wild strawberries; autumn delivers boletus mushrooms and chestnuts.
Even if you're not buying, a slow walk through the stalls with a coffee from the market bar is one of the most authentic local experiences in the city.
