Atrio Restaurant
Housed inside a meticulously restored 16th-century palace in the heart of the monumental city, Atrio is one of Spain's most celebrated restaurants. Chef Toño Pérez holds two Michelin stars and uses hyper-local Extremaduran ingredients — ibérico pork, wild game, Torta del Casar — to create tasting menus that feel like edible love letters to the region.
The Food and the Wine Cellar
Pérez's tasting menus change with the seasons but always anchor themselves in Extremadura's larder. Expect dishes like slow-cooked suckling pig with truffle, or a deconstructed Torta del Casar served in ways that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about cheese.
The wine cellar is legendary — over 40,000 bottles stored in a dramatic underground vault, including vertical collections of Vega Sicilia and Petrus. The sommelier pairing is worth every euro.
The Setting and Booking Tips
The dining room occupies the ground floor of the Palacio de los Cáceres-Ovando, with exposed stone walls, contemporary art and a tranquil inner courtyard that makes the whole experience feel both grand and intimate.
Reservations are essential and should be made weeks in advance, especially for weekend dinners. The hotel above the restaurant (also called Atrio) is equally stunning if you want to make a full weekend of it.
