Cáceres Old Town (Ciudad Monumental)

Step through the Arco de la Estrella and the clock stops somewhere around the 15th century. Cáceres' UNESCO-listed walled city is one of the best-preserved medieval ensembles in all of Europe, a labyrinth of honey-coloured palaces, Moorish towers and cobbled plazas that has doubled as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

The Palaces and Towers

The skyline is punctuated by the crenellated towers of noble families — the Torre de las Cigüeñas (Tower of the Storks) and the Casa de las Veletas are the most photogenic. Wander the Cuesta de la Compañía and you'll stumble on façades encrusted with Renaissance heraldic shields at every turn.

Don't miss the Casa de los Toledo-Moctezuma, built by a conquistador who married the daughter of the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II — history doesn't get more cinematic than that.

Plaza Mayor and the Evening Paseo

Just outside the walls, the broad Plaza Mayor is the social heart of the city. Its arcaded cafés fill up every evening for the paseo, when locals promenade in that unhurried Extremaduran way.

Sit at any terrace, order a caña and watch the swallows dive over the illuminated ramparts as the sun drops — it's the quintessential Cáceres moment.
