Dubai Creek Abra Crossing
For the price of a single dirham, a wooden abra water taxi carries you across Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira — a 10-minute crossing that has barely changed in 200 years and remains the most authentic, exhilarating and absurdly cheap experience in the entire city.
The World's Greatest Bargain Boat Ride
Dubai Creek is the historic tidal waterway that divides the city into Bur Dubai (south) and Deira (north). For over 200 years it was the economic engine of Dubai — pearl diving boats departed from its docks, trading dhows arrived from India, Persia and East Africa, and merchants on both banks built the foundations of what would become a global city. What is extraordinary is that its traditional character survives today.
The shared abra crossing costs AED 1 per person, making it one of the world's great bargain travel experiences. Abras run continuously throughout the day and into the evening, and the crossing takes roughly 10 minutes — long enough to soak in the sight of laden cargo dhows, the Bur Dubai historic skyline and the minaret of the Grand Mosque rising above the waterfront.
How to Make the Most of It
Board at the Bur Dubai Abra Station (beside the Textile Souk) for the standard crossing to Deira Old Souk Station, a two-minute walk from both the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk. Combine the crossing with a morning in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood — the abra dock is just five minutes' walk from the district's entrance.
For a longer experience, hire a private abra for a sightseeing tour of the Creek for AED 100–200 per hour. Evening dhow dinner cruises also depart from the Bur Dubai waterfront near Al Fahidi — a more theatrical way to see the Creek lit up after dark, though book in advance.
