Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

A 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming lagoon sitting right on the Cairns foreshore — and entry is completely free. It is the city's great social equaliser: families, backpackers and grey nomads all share the same shimmering water with Trinity Inlet as their backdrop.

The City's Open-Air Living Room

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon spans more than 4,800 square metres along the foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, offering a year-round safe swimming spot in the heart of the city. Saltwater is pumped directly from the inlet and filtered through a state-of-the-art chlorination system to meet Australian Standards.

At the centre of the lagoon stands the iconic Woven Fish sculpture, a beloved public artwork often surrounded by splashing children and relaxed tourists. Sandy edges, timber decking in moderate shade and open lawn areas give everyone a spot to claim as their own.

What to Bring & When to Go

Entry is entirely free, and the lagoon is open daily from 6am to 9pm (Wednesday from noon due to maintenance). Early mornings and late afternoons are the sweet spots — locals arrive at sunrise for laps before the humidity climbs, and the golden-hour light on the Inlet at dusk is genuinely spectacular.

Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. Free barbecues, shaded picnic areas, showers and toilets are all available on site, and the Cairns Night Markets are a short walk away for an easy evening meal after your swim.

Practical Notes

The lagoon is fully wheelchair accessible with a graded entry and lifeguard supervision during peak daylight hours. Aquatic wheelchairs are available for visitors to use, making this one of the most inclusive public attractions in Tropical North Queensland.

No inflatables, alcohol or food are permitted in the water itself, but the surrounding parklands are perfect for a picnic spread. The Night Markets and Esplanade restaurants are right across the road when hunger strikes.
