Cairns Aquarium

Sitting at 5 Florence Street just a flat five-minute walk from the Esplanade, Cairns Aquarium is the finest primer you will find for the two World Heritage ecosystems on the city's doorstep — the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Over 71 distinct habitats, 16,000 animals and a ten-metre deep reef tank make this far more than a rainy-day fallback.

Two World Heritage Wonders Under One Roof

Cairns Aquarium explores over 71 different habitats, housing more than 16,000 animals from the ecosystems that bracket Tropical North Queensland. The centrepiece is a dramatic ten-metre deep reef tank and a 360-degree oceanarium that places you inside the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet.

Daily animal talks, shark feeds and a hands-on marine touch tank keep the experience lively and interactive. For the brave, the Dive with the Sharks experience puts you in the water with the aquarium's resident reef sharks — a bucket-list moment that requires no open-water certification.

Plan Your Visit Carefully

The aquarium runs from 9:30am to 3:30pm daily, with last admission at 2:30pm — a detail that catches many visitors off guard. Arrive by lunchtime at the latest to do the place justice, and go early in your trip rather than at the end: it is the perfect primer for everything you are about to see for real out on the reef and in the rainforest.

After dark, the building transforms for the Aquarium by Twilight experience, where guides introduce the nocturnal animals of the collection. It is a genuinely different atmosphere from the daytime visit and worth booking separately.

Getting There from Bungalow

From Bungalow it is a short taxi or rideshare ride into the city centre, or a pleasant 20-minute walk via Mulgrave Road and the Esplanade. The aquarium sits at 5 Florence Street, a flat five-minute stroll from the Lagoon — making it easy to combine both in a single morning.

Cairns Central Shopping Centre, five minutes' walk away, has reliable all-day parking if you are driving, as dedicated parking at the aquarium is limited.
