Bungalow's Historic Streetscape & Workers' Cottages
Bungalow is one of Cairns' most characterful inner suburbs, where Federation-era workers' cottages and century-old brick buildings line quiet streets just minutes from the CBD. Strolling here feels like stepping into the city's tropical past — unhurried, genuine and almost entirely tourist-free.
A Suburb With Deep Roots
Bungalow sits about 2.8 km southwest of Cairns CBD and was established as a working-class residential quarter in the early twentieth century. Its compact 2.2 square kilometres are packed with modest timber homes and low-slung commercial buildings that have barely changed in decades.
The suburb stands on the traditional country of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, whose connection to this land stretches back tens of thousands of years. That living history adds a quiet depth to even the most ordinary street corner.
The Red-Brick Post Office on Spence Street
The original red-brick post office on Spence Street is the suburb's most photogenic landmark — a striking colonial-era building that anchors the neighbourhood's identity and makes for a superb early-morning photography subject before the heat builds.
Wander along Aumuller Street and Mulgrave Road to spot the mix of heritage shopfronts and breezy Queenslander-style homes that give Bungalow its unhurried, lived-in character. It is the kind of neighbourhood that rewards slow walking and an eye for architectural detail.
Getting Around Like a Local
Bungalow is highly walkable and cyclable — on a bike it is less than five minutes to the CBD, making it the perfect base for exploring the wider city without ever needing a car.
The Line 143 bus also connects the suburb directly to Cairns city centre, and taxis and rideshares are readily available for onward trips to the Esplanade, Marlin Marina or further afield.
