Mon Repos Turtle Centre

Every summer, the beach at Mon Repos hosts one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on the planet: loggerhead sea turtles hauling themselves ashore to nest, and hatchlings making their first frantic dash to the ocean. It is the largest loggerhead rookery in the South Pacific, and watching it unfold under a warm Queensland night sky is genuinely unforgettable.

The Nesting Season Experience

Between November and January, female loggerheads emerge from the surf after dark, dig deep chambers in the sand with their flippers, and deposit clutches of up to 120 golf-ball-sized eggs. Rangers from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service guide small groups to within metres of nesting turtles, narrating every stage in hushed, reverent tones.

The hatching season runs from January through March, when dozens of tiny turtles erupt from the sand simultaneously and scramble toward the moonlit water. Witnessing a hundred hatchlings surge past your feet is the kind of moment that converts casual visitors into lifelong conservationists.

Visiting Practically

Mon Repos is located about 15 kilometres east of Bundaberg's CBD, an easy 20-minute drive along Bargara Road. Guided turtle encounters are ticketed and sell out weeks in advance — book through the Queensland National Parks booking portal the moment dates open in October.

The Turtle Centre itself has excellent interpretive displays open year-round, explaining the loggerhead's life cycle, migration routes and the ongoing tagging research that has been conducted here since 1968. Even outside turtle season the beach is beautiful and the centre worth a visit.
