Weingut Sturm-Pargen, Bullay
Tucked into the village of Bullay with a vineyard stretching up the hillside behind it, Weingut Sturm-Pargen is the kind of family winery that makes the Moselle so irresistible: honest estate wines, a relaxed wine bar with a short but well-chosen menu, and a welcome that feels genuinely personal rather than tourist-facing. Pull up a chair, order a glass of Bullayer Brautrock Riesling, and let the
The Bullayer Brautrock Vineyard
The estate's most celebrated wine comes from the Bullayer Brautrock, a steep south-facing Einzellage (single vineyard) whose slate soils produce Rieslings of racy acidity and pronounced minerality. The vineyard's romantic name — 'bride's skirt' — is commemorated by a copper fountain monument, the Brautrock-Brunnen, in the village centre, making it one of Bullay's most charming hidden landmarks.
Sturm-Pargen also stocks wines from other respected Moselle producers, so the wine list doubles as a miniature tour of the valley — ideal if you want to compare terroirs without leaving your table.
Wine Bar & Food
The wine bar keeps a short, focused menu that pairs confidently with the estate's bottles — think regional cheeses, charcuterie and seasonal plates that let the wine do the talking. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, the service knowledgeable without being precious.
Sitting outside with a glass of dry Spätlese as the sun drops behind the Moselle hillside is one of those simple Moselle Valley pleasures that costs very little and stays with you for years. This is exactly the kind of spontaneous, rewarding find that makes slow travel worthwhile.
The Brautrock-Brunnen: A Village Detour
Before or after your tasting, seek out the copper Brautrock-Brunnen fountain in Bullay's village centre — a modest but charming monument dedicated to the vineyard that put the village on the Moselle wine map. The historic half-timbered houses along Zehnthausstraße nearby are worth a slow stroll too.
Bullay's annual autumn festival, held on the second weekend of September, transforms the village into an open-air wine party with public tastings, traditional food and fireworks — the perfect moment to visit Sturm-Pargen and taste the new vintage straight from the barrel.
