The first thing you notice in Bullay is the bridge — a double-decker crossing the Moselle with road traffic on the lower deck and the Koblenz–Trier railway running on top. It was built between 1875 and 1878, blown partly apart in 1945, and quietly repaired, which is more or less the shape of Bullay's whole story.

This is a small town that earns its place on the map through infrastructure rather than spectacle. Trains from as far as Berlin stop here. The Moselle Wine Railway begins here. A ferry crosses to Alf. From the promenade, vineyards named Brautrock and Sonneck climb the slate slopes above the river, and the slate is doing something useful — absorbing sun all day and releasing warmth through the night, the same trick that ripens the Riesling.

People who come back tend to time it around the second weekend of September, when the autumn festival draws locals and the hillside vines are turning. They also mention the wine tavern at Brautrock — Onkel Toms Hütte — as worth tracking down, and the public art at the Environmental Railway Station, where the sculptures are genuinely strange.

Good to know
Every train between Koblenz and Trier stops at Bullay, including an Intercity to Berlin, making arrival easy. September is the sweet spot — cooler than summer, fewer people, vines in colour. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms. The Tourist Information office on Lindenplatz 2 is closed Saturdays.

The story

How Bullay came to be

Bullay sits on ground that was already settled in Roman times. Its first written mention comes in 1150, recorded as 'Buley infra Cell.' Through the medieval period, lordship passed between four noble families — Zand von Merl, Boos von Waldeck, von Metzenhausen, and von Kellenbach (later von Ladenberg) — and for roughly eighty years from 1470, the hills were worked for minerals as well as grapes.

French forces arrived in 1794, and the Congress of Vienna handed the town to Prussia in 1815. The railway changed things more durably: when the Koblenz–Trier line opened in 1879, Bullay acquired the connectivity it still runs on. After 1946 it became part of the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

When to go

Summers are warm — often well above 27°C — with a reasonable chance of late-afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. The slate valley holds heat into the evenings, making autumn mild; September in particular offers cooler, clearer days before the cold sets in around December.
