Moselweinbahn Scenic Railway: Bullay to Traben-Trarbach
The 54-kilometre Moselweinbahn is one of Germany's most scenic branch lines, threading through terraced vineyards, half-timbered villages and river curves between Bullay and Traben-Trarbach on a route built in the late 19th century to carry wine and slate to market. Today it carries travellers past landscapes that simply cannot be seen from the road, with large windows framing a slow-motion slides
A Railway Built for Wine
The Moselweinbahn was constructed primarily to transport the region's famous wine and slate from isolated valley villages to the wider rail network at Bullay. Several stops along the route allow passengers to hop off and explore at leisure — the line is the backbone of a brilliant car-free day trip through the heart of the Middle Moselle.
Trains run roughly hourly between Bullay and Traben-Trarbach, making it easy to alight at a village, walk a vineyard trail or visit a winery, then catch the next service onward. The journey end-to-end takes under an hour, but there is no reason to rush it.
Traben-Trarbach: The Art Nouveau Jewel
The line terminates at Traben-Trarbach, one of the most rewarding towns on the entire Moselle and a dream for photographers. A stroll through town reveals beautiful half-timbered houses, a remarkable collection of Art Nouveau buildings, the medieval Grevenburg castle ruins on the hill above, and the iconic bridge gate of the Moselle bridge — all within easy walking distance of the station.
The Grevenburg, built in the 14th century, survives as atmospheric ruins above the town; the remains of the commander's house with the river valley behind it make for one of the Moselle's finest compositions. Trains run hourly back to Bullay, so a three-hour stopover is perfectly timed.
Car-Free Moselle at Its Best
Using the Moselweinbahn as a base for a car-free day is one of the smartest moves a Bullay visitor can make. Combine it with the Moselle Cycle Path — bikes are carried on the train — for a one-way ride through vineyards and a relaxed train return, or simply ride the full route twice and drink in the changing light.
The train is also equipped with large windows specifically designed to showcase the scenery, so a window seat on the river side (right-hand side travelling from Bullay towards Traben-Trarbach) rewards you with an unbroken panorama of the Moselle's most picturesque stretch.
