Prinzenkopfturm Observation Tower

Climb 113 steps up this slender 27-metre tower above the village of Pünderich and suddenly the Moselle reveals its great secret: a sweeping 14-kilometre river loop that coils around the Petersberg peninsula like a liquid moat, with Bullay, Zell and vine-draped hillsides spread beneath you in every direction. It is one of the most jaw-dropping viewpoints in the entire valley, and surprisingly few t

The View That Stopped a Crown Prince

The Prinzenkopfturm sits on the forested ridge directly opposite Pünderich, reachable via a 1.2-km forest path from the car park near the Marienburg monastery. The tower's name — Prince's Head — recalls Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who was reportedly so captivated by the panorama here in 1818 that he stopped his carriage and lingered for hours.

From the open viewing platform at the top, the Moselle appears not once but several times simultaneously, curling around the Zeller Hamm peninsula in a loop so pronounced it looks like a river that cannot decide which way to go. On a clear day, Bullay, Zell, Pünderich and their surrounding vineyards are all visible in a single breathtaking sweep.

En Route: Marienburg Monastery

The path to the tower passes the Marienburg, a former Augustinian convent dating from the 12th century, its honey-coloured stone walls rising from the forest edge in quiet dignity. Today it operates as a youth education centre of the Diocese of Trier, but the exterior and grounds are freely visible and make a lovely pause on the way up.

From the monastery, a well-signed forest trail continues to the tower in about 15 minutes. The ascent is moderate and suitable for most fitness levels — a world away from the nearby Calmont via ferrata, yet the reward at the top is equally spectacular.

Combining with the Kanonenbahn Trail

The Prinzenkopfturm sits naturally on the Kanonenbahn themed hiking route that begins in Bullay, making it easy to combine the tower visit with the double-decker bridge and a riverside walk back to the village. The full loop from Bullay station takes around two hours at a gentle pace.

On weekends and public holidays, a small wine stall sometimes operates near the Calmont summit cross in the wider area, but the Prinzenkopf itself is best enjoyed with a picnic — pack a bottle of local Riesling and take your time on the platform.
