The museum's 30-odd structures were dismantled from threatened sites across the Puster Valley and re-erected here with their original fittings intact — sleeping lofts still have the straw mattresses, kitchens still have the blackened hearth chains, and the root cellars still smell of stored turnips. It is emphatically not a sanitised heritage experience.
The 16th-century Ansitz Mair am Hof manor house at the heart of the complex contains the main indoor exhibition on Ladin, German and Italian peasant culture in the Dolomites, with original tools, costumes and documents. The Ladin section is particularly rare — this minority culture is often overlooked in favour of the more visible German and Italian identities of South Tyrol.
The Surrounding Meadow Walk
The museum sits within a broad hay meadow that is itself a protected landscape; the traditional scything regime means the grass is left long until July, when it blazes with wild orchids, harebells and yellow rattle. A signed 1.5 km loop path connects the outer farm buildings and takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.
In late June the museum hosts the Heufest (hay festival), a free public event with folk music, scythe-sharpening competitions and a communal hay-making demonstration that draws farming families from across the valley.
Practicalities
The museum is easily reached on foot or by bicycle from Brunico along the flat Puster Valley cycle path (Ciclovia dell'Alto Adige), which passes within 500 m of the entrance. Combine it with a stop at the nearby Rienza river bank for a picnic.
Visitor numbers are modest even in peak summer, making this one of the most peaceful and genuinely educational half-days available anywhere near Brunico — a complete contrast to the busy gondola stations and ski resorts.
