Broadway High Street

Lined with wide grass verges and glowing honey-coloured Cotswold stone buildings, Broadway's High Street is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful village streets in England. With nearly 90% of its shops independently owned, it rewards slow, aimless wandering far more than any retail park ever could.

The Architecture of a Perfect English Village

The High Street stretches from the upper village down through its commercial heart, with period buildings dating back centuries framing every view. In spring and early summer, facades are draped in wisteria and climbing roses — May is peak flower season and particularly photogenic, though also the busiest time of year.

Keep an eye out for the hidden Millennium Garden, tucked away behind the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery. It is a quiet, easily missed green space that makes a perfect breather between shops and galleries.

Shopping, Galleries & the Deli

The Broadway Deli on the High Street is arguably the village's most photogenic spot, with colourful seasonal produce stacked outside and a retro truck parked at the kerb. Inside, it serves an all-day café menu of sandwiches, soups, salads and quiches, with gluten-free and vegan options available.

For sweet treats, Guilt Trip Coffee and Donuts serves inventive flavour combinations alongside organic fair-trade coffees, while The Cotswold Larder Cakery on Kennel Lane does cakes, brownies and milkshakes. Boutique browsers should note Wild at Heart for gifts and the Cotswold Distillery's gin shop on the High Street.

After Dark: Pubs & Christmas Magic

The Horse and Hound, at the end of the High Street opposite the Broadway Museum, is a traditional pub offering cosy open fires in winter and a beer garden in summer — exactly the kind of place you come to the Cotswolds to find.

If you visit in December, the late-night Christmas shopping evenings (last Friday of November and first Friday of December) transform the village into something magical: mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, carols and horse chestnut trees glittering with lights against the cold Cotswold stone.
