Mirador del Barranco del Tajuña
A short walk from the old town's northern gate brings you to the edge of the Tajuña gorge, where a natural limestone belvedere drops away sharply to reveal a river valley of poplars, vegetable gardens and ochre cliffs that feels entirely untouched. This is Brihuega's finest free viewpoint and one of the most underrated in the whole province of Guadalajara.
Finding the viewpoint
From the Plaza de la Constitución walk north along Calle Real until you reach the Puerta de la Cadena gate, then bear left along the outside of the wall. Within 200 metres a worn path leads to the escarpment edge where a low stone parapet marks the unofficial mirador.
The view opens suddenly and dramatically: the gorge is perhaps 80 metres deep here, its walls striped in cream and rust limestone, and the river glints silver far below through a corridor of white poplars. In spring the poplar canopy is a brilliant acid green; in autumn it turns pure gold.
What to bring and when to come
Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the magic moments. In the morning, mist sometimes fills the lower gorge while the upper walls catch pink light; at dusk the cliff faces glow amber and swallows wheel in their hundreds above the river.
Bring water and sunscreen — there is no shade on the escarpment path in summer. The terrain is easy but the edge is unfenced, so keep children and dogs close. A pair of binoculars rewards birdwatchers: griffon vultures, kestrels and black redstarts are regular sightings.
Combining with a walk below
A steep path descends from near the viewpoint to the valley floor, where a riverside track follows the Tajuña for several kilometres through market gardens and old mill ruins. The return climb takes about 20 minutes but the valley-floor perspective — looking back up at the walled town perched on its cliff — is a completely different and equally arresting view.
The full loop, viewpoint descent, riverside walk and return, covers about 5 km and takes 90 minutes at an easy pace. Pack a picnic; there are shaded spots by the river that feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from the town centre.
