Mercado de la Lavanda — Brihuega's Annual Lavender Market
Held each July during the Fiesta de la Lavanda, Brihuega's outdoor lavender market transforms the Plaza de la Constitución and the surrounding streets into a fragrant bazaar where local producers sell everything distilled, pressed or woven from the plateau's lavender harvest. It is the most authentic way to bring Brihuega home in a bag.
What you'll find
Stalls are run almost exclusively by local and regional producers rather than mass-market vendors, so the quality is genuinely high. Look for glass vials of pure essential oil from the Brihuega cooperative, lavender-infused honey from beehives kept at the field edges, handmade soaps, linen sachets and lavender-flavoured nougat called turrón de lavanda.
Artisan ceramics painted with lavender motifs, hand-sewn linen table runners and small watercolours of the fields are sold alongside the food and cosmetic products, making the market a good one-stop shop for considered souvenirs rather than plastic tat.
Food and drink at the market
Several stalls serve hot food: roasted lamb chops from the Alcarria region, migas manchegas (fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and egg), and slabs of Manchego cheese with quince paste. A bar set up in the square pours local wine from the Mondéjar DO and, inevitably, lavender liqueur over ice.
The market also features live folk music in the afternoon, and in the early evening the town's brass band typically parades through the stalls, which gives the whole event an infectiously festive energy that goes well beyond a simple craft fair.
Planning your visit
The market runs on the second Sunday of July, from approximately 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Arrive before noon to get the best choice of products and to avoid the worst of the midday heat. Parking fills quickly; use the designated overflow car park on the road to Valdearenas and walk the 15 minutes into town.
If you cannot make the Sunday market, several local producers sell year-round from small shops on Calle Palacio and from the cooperative's own outlet on the edge of town. The cooperative shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
