Bressanone Christmas Market (Mercatino di Natale)
Ranked among the most atmospheric Christmas markets in all of Italy, Bressanone's Mercatino di Natale fills the Cathedral Square and Via Portici every December with the scent of roasted chestnuts, mulled Glühwein and freshly cut fir. The medieval backdrop makes it feel like a stage set — except every detail is entirely real.
What Makes It Special
Unlike the sprawling mega-markets of Bolzano, Bressanone's version is intimate — around 80 hand-selected stalls selling locally made wooden toys, hand-painted glass ornaments, beeswax candles and South Tyrolean wool felt goods.
The market runs from late November to 6 January, giving it one of the longest seasons in the region, so you can visit even after the Christmas rush has died down.
What to Eat and Drink
Station yourself at one of the Glühwein huts for a ceramic mug of spiced red wine infused with local elderflower and star anise — the recipe changes slightly from stall to stall and comparing them is half the fun.
Grab a paper cone of Marroni (roasted chestnuts), a Kiachl (deep-fried dough dusted with icing sugar) or a slab of Zelten — the dense, fruit-and-nut bread that South Tyroleans bake only at Christmas.
Getting the Most Out of It
Visit on a weekday evening when the stalls are lit but the crowds are thinner; the cathedral towers illuminated behind the market make for an unforgettable photograph.
Parking is limited in December — take the train to Bressanone station (direct from Bolzano in 30 min) and walk straight into the old town.
