Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve
Twenty minutes south of Brescia by car, the Torbiere del Sebino is a WWF-protected peat bog reserve on the southern shore of Lake Iseo where, in July and August, thousands of lotus flowers bloom in vivid pink across the shallow water. It is one of the most surreal and beautiful natural spectacles in Lombardy and almost no international visitor knows it exists.
The reserve in bloom
The lotus plants — Nelumbo nucifera — were introduced in the early 20th century and have colonised the former peat extraction pools so completely that the water surface disappears entirely under their dinner-plate leaves and waist-high pink flowers each summer.
A wooden boardwalk and a 4.5-kilometre circular path around the reserve let you get close to the blooms without disturbing the nesting great crested grebes, herons and coots that breed here year-round.
Beyond the lotus season
Outside July–August, the reserve is still worth visiting for birdwatching — it sits on a major migratory flyway and spring brings kingfishers, marsh harriers and occasional osprey over the open water.
The village of Provaglio d'Iseo at the reserve's edge has a Cluniac monastery, the Priorato di San Pietro in Lamosa, whose Romanesque church overlooks the bogs from a low hill and can be visited on weekend mornings.
