Castello di Brescia & Colle Cidneo
Brescia's medieval castle crowns the Colle Cidneo hill just north of the old town, offering 360-degree views over the terracotta rooftops, the Po Plain and, on clear days, the first alpine ridges. The climb takes under 15 minutes on foot and rewards you with one of the best free panoramas in Lombardy.
The fortress and its gardens
The castle complex is enormous — a patchwork of towers, ramparts and courtyards built between the 13th and 16th centuries — and the grounds are open as a public park where locals jog, picnic and let children loose among the cannons.
Inside the walls you'll find two small but worthwhile museums: the Museo delle Armi Luigi Marzoli, housing one of Europe's finest private collections of Renaissance armour, and the Museo del Risorgimento, tracing Italy's 19th-century unification.
