Ruppertsklamm Gorge
Just north of Braubach on the Rheinsteig, the Ruppertsklamm is the Rhine Valley's best-kept secret for adventurous walkers — a narrow, rope-secured ravine where the path climbs 235 metres through a stream-sculpted gorge in just 1.5 kilometres of pure drama.
Into the Gorge
The Ruppertsklamm carves through the Nassau Nature Park, and at its most spectacular point the trail runs directly through the stream bed, with fixed wire ropes to grip as you scramble over mossy boulders and through tight rocky passages. The combination of dripping walls, dappled forest light and rushing water makes it feel genuinely wild — hard to believe you are minutes from a Rhine cruise port.
The gorge is the headline act of Rheinsteig Stage 10 (Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein to Niederlahnstein), but it can also be walked as a circular day hike from Braubach or Lahnstein without committing to the full long-distance route.
Practical Adventure Notes
Waterproof shoes are strongly advisable — the stream-bed sections mean wet feet are almost guaranteed in anything but a prolonged dry spell. The gorge is suitable for confident, sure-footed hikers; an alternative flatter route exists for those who prefer to skip the rope sections.
Dogs can do the gorge too, though they will need a helping hand on the steepest wire-rope pitches. The route from Koblenz to Braubach via the Ruppertsklamm can also be completed as a single day trip.
