Kerkertserplatte Viewpoint on the Rheinsteig
For the single greatest photograph of Marksburg Castle and the Rhine Valley, hike to the Kerkertserplatte viewpoint on the Rheinsteig trail — a short but steep climb that rewards you with one of the most famous vistas in all of the Rhine Gorge.
The Classic Shot of Marksburg
The viewpoint sits on the hill directly north of Braubach, and from it you look back over the town with Marksburg rising dramatically above — castle, river, vineyards and forested slopes all stacked in one frame. It is the postcard view that travel photographers chase, and it genuinely lives up to its reputation.
The best view is actually reached before the official Kerkertserplatte summit: a short, steep ten-minute walk from the Braubach tourist information office up Kerkertserstrasse leads to a signed footpath, and about five minutes along that path you hit the sweet spot.
Part of the Rheinsteig Long-Distance Trail
The Kerkertserplatte lies on the Rheinsteig, one of Germany's most celebrated long-distance walking routes, which runs directly through Braubach. Stage 11 of the trail begins in Niederlahnstein and ends in Braubach, passing the Lahnhöhe and Kerkertser Platte viewpoints before descending past Marksburg into the town.
If you want to extend the day, the Rheinsteig continues north toward the rope-secured Ruppertsklamm gorge — one of the trail's most thrilling sections — making a full loop possible for fit hikers.
